Session starts with Olivier Panis and Enrique Bernoldi the first to go out

10 min: Jean Alesi returns to the pits after a couple of laps. He didn't cover a lot of laps in the first session due to gearbox problems. Tarso Marques blew his engine on the track and the yellow flags are out while they clean up.

19 min: Jarno Trulli sets a fast time of 1:30.813 almost two seconds better than his previous fastest time.

25 min: Rubens Barrichello fastest followed by Michael Schumacher.

30 min: Most of the cars are back in the pits although Rubens Barrichello and Mika Hakkinen still out on fast laps.

31 min: Jenson Button loses most of his left rear tyre but manages to get back into the pits.

32 min: Luciano Burti loses it going into turn 2 and crashes into the wall.

33 min: Michael Schumacher sets the fastest time of 1:28.965

36 min: Session red flagged due to Burti's crash.

39 min: Session resumes after clearing Burti's car from the track.

41 min: Jacques Villeneuve on track. He has improved after losing a lot of time in the morning session due to a transmission problem.

42 min: Jenson Button goes out on the track following the replacment of his tyres

44 min: Mika Hakkinen out on track.

46 min: Eddie Irvine into the pits.

48 min: Mika Hakkinen sets his best time of the day with a time of 1:29.799.

49 min: Rubens Barrichello on the track.

51 min: Juan Pablo Montoya returns to the track.

53 min: Rubens Barrichello set the fastest time with a time of 1:28.965

55 min: Jacques Villeneuve returns to the track while Juan Pablo Montoya and Eddie Irvine return to the pits.

59 min: With 5 minutes remaining, Heinz Harald Frentzen goes through the gravel trap.

1 hr 1 min: Gaston Mazzacane crosses the gravel trap but recovers.

1 hr 3 min: Michael Schumacher spins and crosses the gravel trap sideways causing the car to roll twice before landing on the gravel. He is OK.

Session ends with Rubens Barrichello ahead of Jarno Trulli and Michael Schumacher. David Coulthard, Mika Hakkinen and Ralf Schumacher make the top 6.
