Austrian Grand Prix Friday Practice Sessions

First Practice Session:

Rubens Barrichello sets the fastest time of session 0.237 seconds ahead of Jarno Trulli. A surprise Ricardo Zonta was 3rd just 0.002 seconds ahead of 4th place Jos Verstappen. Michael Schumacher and David Coulthard make the top 6.

The session became interesting in the last 20 minutes as grip on the track increased, lap times dropped very quickly and the top 4 times were all set in the final 2 minutes of the session. The field is very close with 1 second separating the top 7 while 2 seconds separate the top 19. Mika Hakkinen didn't set a time due to his car stopping on the track with engine problems.

Gaston Mazzacane did the most number of laps with 27 while Hakkinen did none. Most other drivers did between 15 and 23 laps although David Coulthard only did 7 laps and Ralf Schumacher did 9.

The session started with several drivers going out on their installation laps. Mika Hakkinen's session was over on his installation lap as he suffered an engine problem forcing him to stop on the track. Marc Gene is the first to set a timed lap with a time of 1:18.307 followed by Gaston Mazzacane with a time of 1:20.802. Last year's fastest time on Friday was set by Damon Hill with a time of 1:13.303.

10 minutes into the session and it is Marc Gene ahead of Gaston Mazzacane. No other times have been set.

Both Minardi drivers improve their times but no other driver sets a time until Jenson Button decides to go out 15 minutes into the session. He is followed be several other drivers.

20 minutes into the session and it is Johnny Herbert ahead of Eddie Irvine and Marc Gene. Heinz Harald Frentzen, Gaston Mazzacane and Jenson Button make the top 6.

More drivers take to the track and the lap times start dropping with drivers exchanging fastest laps by the minute. Only 10 drivers have set times so far, none from the top 2 teams although Hakkinen is out of the session due to an engine problem.

30 minutes into the session and it is Johnny Herbert ahead of Jos Verstappen and Jenson Button. Eddie Irvine, Ricardo Zonta and Gaston Mazzacane make the top 6. Herbert's fastest time so far is 1:15.672.

Only 5 minutes to go and Rubens Barrichello sets the fastest time just 0.016 seconds ahead of Michael Schumacher. 2 minutes later Ricardo Zonta in the BAR goes fastest a tenth of a second faster than Barrichello!. Jarno Trulli then becomes the first to go under the 1:14 mark with a time of 1:13.840. Barrichello takes the top spot back in the final minute of the session

Final order: Rubens Barrichello ahead of Jarno Trulli and Ricardo Zonta. Jos Verstappen, Michael Schumacher and David Coulthard make the top 6.

 Second Practice Session:

David Coulthard dominates the second session ahead of his teammate Mika Hakkinen and Sauber's Mika Salo. Michael Schumacher was 4th ahead of Ricardo Zonta and Jarno Trulli.

The top 4 drivers have set a time under the 1:13 mark and David Coulthard's time is 0.8 seconds faster than the fastest time set here on Friday last year. 1 second separates the top 8. Eddie Irvine and Ralf Schumacher are the only 2 to be more than 2 seconds off the pace, both suffering problems forcing an early end to their sessions.

Giancarlo Fisichella did the most number of laps with 31 while Ralf Schumacher did only 4. Most other drivers did between 20 and 26 laps although Eddie Irvine only 7 laps.

The session started with Ralf Schumacher going out first as he did a few laps in the first session, he was followed by Marc Gene and Jean Alesi.

Ralf improves his time slightly but on the next lap he suffers an electrical  problem and stops on the track. Session over for Ralf.

Giancarlo Fisichella moves into the top 6 while Jacques Villeneuve goes fastest with a time of 1:13.463.

10 minutes into the session and it is Jacques Villeneuve ahead of Rubens Barrichello and Jarno Trulli. Ricardo Zonta, Jos Verstappen and Giancarlo Fisichella make the top 6.

Coulthard goes under the 1:13 mark with a time of 1:12.793, Mika Hakkinen moves into 2nd place 0.336 seconds behind David. Michael Schumacher moves into 3rd after being outside the top 10 for most of the session. Ricardo Zonta spins 360 degrees but recovers.

Ricardo Zonta moves into 4th and then into 2nd position just 0.259 seconds behind David Coulthard. Hakkinen retakes 2nd position moments later but it is very surprising to see both BAR's mixing it with the top 2 teams. We must wait until qualifying to see if this is an accurate comparison as they might be running a different setup.
