Belgian Grand Prix Friday Practice Sessions

First Practice Session:

David Coulthard sets the fastest time of the session over 0.8 seconds ahead of Michael Schumacher. Mika Hakkinen, Jarno Trulli, Rubens Barrichello and Jacques Villeneuve make the top 6.

David Coulthard was the only driver to go under the 1:54 mark and faster than the best time set here on Friday last year. What is more interesting is that the time he set was on his very first flying lap!

Gaston Mazzacane did the most number of laps with 15 followed by Wurz, Button and Heidfeld. Jean Alesi's car stopped on the installation lap so he ended up with no laps, Frentzen only did 4 laps and so did Hakkinen. Most drivers did between 8 and 12 laps.
There were no major incidents during the session however, Alesi and de la Rosa both stopped on the track while several drivers spun including Villeneuve, Salo and Diniz.

0 Min - Session underway with dry and sunny conditions. Temperature at 20 degrees

0 Min - Both the Prost cars are out followed by the 2 BAR's and the 2 Minardi's

0 Min - Jean Alesi stops on the track, session over for him!

1 Min - A few more drivers go out on their installation lap including Ralf Schumacher, Button and Wurz

3 Min - Most drivers have gone out on their installation laps except for Ferrari. No set times yet

5 Min - All cars have returned to the pits, no activity at the moment

8 Min - Still no cars on the track

10 Min - Gaston Mazzacane is out again to do his first flying lap 

12 Min - Gaston Mazzacane sets the first time lap of the day with a time of  2:00.031 - Slow!

14 Min - Marc Gene goes out as well while Mazzacane improves to 1:59.855. (Best time on Friday last year was David Coulthard with a time of 1:53.577

16 Min - Marc Gene's time first timed lap is 1:59.273 and takes 1st

19 Min - Jenson Button and Jos Verstappen go out on the track

20 Min - Alexander Wurz goes out as well.

23 Min - Jenson Button goes first clocking 1:57.834 while Verstappen clocks a 1:58.222

25 Min - Order : Button, Gene, Verstappen, Mazzacane

26 Min - Alexander Wurz goes fastest with a time of 1:56.847 while Verstappen goes second

28 Min - 7 drivers with set times. Top 6: Wurz (1:55.985), de la Rosa, Verstappen, Heidfeld and Gene

31 Min - Jacques Villeneuve goes out on track. Wurz improves to 1:55.698 and Button moves into 2nd.

32 Min - Several more drivers go out including Frentzen and Trulli. Villeneuve spins but recovers

34 Min - Top 6: Button (1:55.270), Wurz, Herbert, de la Rosa, Verstappen and Heidfeld

36 Min - Trulli goes fastest with a time of 1:54.904 while Villeneuve moves into 5th. 10 drivers have set times

38 Min - Villeneuve goes fastest (1:54.849) while his teammate Ricardo Zonta goes out in the track

40 Min - Top 6: Villeneuve (1:54.849), Trulli, Button, Herbert, Wurz and de la Rosa. No times from McLaren or Ferrari

43 Min - Pedro de la Rosa stops on track, Ralf Schumacher and Rubens Barrichello go out on track

45 Min - Top 6: Villeneuve (1:54.849), Trulli, Button, Herbert, Barrichello, Wurz. 18 drivers have set times

47 Min - Only Coulthard, Hakkinen, M Schumacher and Jean Alesi have not set times. Fisichella goes 6th

49 Min - Barrichello goes fastest with a time of 1:47.140 while Ralf Schumacher moves into 4th

51 Min - Top 6: Barrichello (1:54.714), Villeneuve, Trulli, Fisichella, R Schumacher and Button. Both McLaren's on track

53 Min - Coulthard goes first on his first flying lap (1:53.398), Hakkinen is 2nd, M Schumacher out on track

56 Min - Top 6: Coulthard (1:53.398), Hakkinen, Barrichello, Villeneuve, Trulli and Fisichella

58 Min - Trulli improves to 3rd, M Schumacher in 6th position

60 Min - Final Order: David Coulthard (1:53.398) over 0.8 seconds ahead of Michael Schumacher. Hakkinen, Trulli, Barrichello and Villeneuve make the top 6

 Second Practice Session:

Despite not improving on his time of the first session, David Coulthard remains fastest over half a second ahead of his teammate Mika Hakkinen. Johnny Herbert is a surprise third while Jacques Villeneuve is also a surprise in 4th place. Michael Schumacher is in 5th position while Alexander Wurz is in good form in 6th place.

Several drivers didn't improve on their times as they were testing race setup. There were several contrasts between teammates with Herbert in 3rd while Irvine was in 16th. Villeneuve in 4th while Zonta was in 15th. Verstappen in 7th while Pedro de la Rosa was in 20th. On the other hand a few teammates were very close with Ralf Schumacher and Jenson Button in 12th and 13th while Jean Alesi and Nick Heidfeld make the back of the grid in 21st and 22nd

Jacques Villeneuve made the most number of laps this session with 20 followed by Barrichello and Zonta with 18 each. Jos Verstappen did the least number of laps with 7 followed by David Coulthard with 8 and Pedro de la Rosa with 9. Most drivers did between 12 and 16 laps.

David Coulthard remains the only driver to set a time faster than last year's best Friday time.

There were no major incidents during this session.

2 Min - Frentzen improves immediately and moves into 13th position while Jean Alesi sets his first time of the day in 21st

4 Min - Alesi moves into 17th position. M Schumacher and David Coulthard go out on the track

7 Min - No improvements so far except from Frentzen and Alesi. David Coulthard is over a second slower than his best time

10 Min - A few drivers are on track but still no improvements so far.

12 Min - It appears that most drivers are testing race configuration as no times have improved

15 Min - Top 6 remains: Coulthard, M Schumacher, Hakkinen, Trulli, Barrichello and Villeneuve

17 Min - Frentzen is on track trying to improve on his 13th position, his teammate Jarno Trulli is up in 4th

20 Min - Giancarlo Fisichella moves into 3rd place just behind Michael Schumacher. Alesi moves into 15th

25 Min - Top 6: Coulthard, M Schumacher, Fisichella, Hakkinen, Trulli and Barrichello

27 Min - Hakkinen moves into 2nd with a time under the 1:54 mark. Michael Schumacher completes a long run

30 Min - Top 6: Coulthard, Hakkinen, M Schumacher, Fisichella, Trulli and Barrichello

32 Min - Barrichello and Fisichella go out on the track

35 Min - Only Hakkinen, Fisichella, Frentzen, Alesi and Mazzacane have improved their time this session

37 Min - Pedro de la Rosa improves to 14th

40 Min - Top 6: Coulthard, Hakkinen, M Schumacher, Fisichella, Trulli and Barrichello

43 Min - Ricardo Zonta improves to 12th from 19th

45 Min - Mika Hakkinen improves but is still over half a second slower than Coulthard. Diniz moves into 13th

48 Min - Top 6 remains: Coulthard, Hakkinen, M Schumacher, Fisichella, Trulli and Barrichello

51 Min - Alexander Wurz moves into 5th position just behind his teammate Giancarlo Fisichella. Mazzacane improves to 19th

52 Min - Top 6: Coulthard, Hakkinen, M Schumacher, Fisichella, Wurz and Trulli

54 Min - Marc Gene moves into 8th position while Barrichello improves to 5th splitting the Benetton's

57 Min - Jacques Villeneuve moves into 3rd position just ahead of Michael Schumacher while Jos Verstappen moves from 22nd into 5th!

59 Min - Alexander Wurz moves back into 5th just 0.04 seconds behind Michael Schumacher.

60 Min - Johnny Herbert moves into 3rd   just behind Mika Hakkinen and under the 1:54 mark

60 Min - Final Order: David Coulthard ahead of Mika Hakkinen and Johnny Herbert. Jacques Villeneuve, Michael Schumacher and Alexander Wurz make the top 6.
