European Grand Prix Saturday Practice and Qualifying

First Practice Session:

Michael Schumacher sets the fastest time ahead of Mika Hakkinen and Heinz Harald Frentzen. David Coulthard, Pedro de la Rosa and Ralf Schumacher make the top 6.

The driver order is almost back to normal and with the exception of Pedro de la Rosa, the top 6 is very familiar. Alexander Wurz who was second fastest yesterday had a problem in the pits and did not participate in the latter half of the session. He is in 21st place ahead of Jos Verstappen who suffered an engine problem very early in the session.

The session started with all the drivers going out for on their installation lap. Marc Gene was the first to set a timed lap with a time of 1:23.495 followed by Heinz Harald Frentzen with a time of 1:22.640.

15 minutes into the session and Frentzen was fastest ahead of Trulli, Ralf Schumacher, Heidfeld and Irvine.

20 minutes into the session and it is Hakkinen ahead of Frentzen followed by Trulli, Michael Schumacher, Barrichello and Irvine. Hakkinen and Frentzen are the first to drop below the 1:20 mark. Meanwhile Verstappen suffers engine problems and stops.

30 minutes into the session and Mika Hakkinen is still fastest just 0.005 seconds ahead of Frentzen followed by Michael Schumacher, Coulthard, Ralf Schumacher and Jenson Button. Pedro Diniz spins but recovers.

With 10 minutes to go in this 45 minutes session and it is Michael Schumacher ahead of Hakkinen, Frentzen, Coulthard, Ralf Schumacher and Barrichello.

In the final few minutes of the session, Michael Schumacher manages to clock a time under 1:19 while Pedro de la Rosa and Jenson Button both spin and retire.

Final order for the session, Michael Schumacher, Mika Hakkinen, Heinz Harald Frentzen, David Coulthard, Pedro de la Rosa and Ralf Schumacher. Michael Schumacher is almost 0.6 seconds faster than Mika Hakkinen.

Michael Schumacher's time this session is already over 1.3 seconds faster than the pole position time set last year by Heinz Harald Frentzen. That time was set in drying conditions though and could have been slightly faster.

Second Practice Session:

Michael Schumacher remains at the top of the timesheets for the day ahead of team-mate Rubens Barrichello and Mika Hakkinen. David Coulthard, Heinz Harald Frentzen and Giancarlo Fisichella make the top 6.

The session started with no drivers going out immediately. A few minutes later Mika Hakkinen was out and improved his time to 1:18.761 but still slower than Michael Schumacher's time set in the first session. David Coulthard and Rubens Barrichello were the next drivers to post a time under 1:19.

10 minutes into the session and the order is Michael Schumacher ahead of Rubens Barrichello, Mika Hakkinen, David Coulthard, Heinz Harald Frentzen and Pedro de la Rosa.

20 minutes into the session and the top 4 remain as is followed by Jacques Villeneuve and Heinz Harald Frentzen. Alexander Wurz who had problems during the first session is up to 13th position. Only the top 4 are under the 1:19 mark.

30 minutes into the session and again no change in the top 4 and Frentzen takes 5th place from Villeneuve. Neither manages to go under 1:19.

10 minutes remaining and David Coulthard spins and stalls and so does Marc Gene. Order for the top 5 remains the same with Ralf Schumacher in 6th place ahead of Jacques Villeneuve.

In the final 5 minutes, Rubens Barrichello suffers an engine problem and pits, Jos Verstappen manages to get back on track as his engine problem has been fixed and the top 5 remain as is while Giancarlo Fisichella moves into 6th position.

Final order for the session:

Michael Schumacher, Rubens Barrichello, Mika Hakkinen, David Coulthard, Heinz Harald Frentzen and Giancarlo Fisichella.

Several drivers did not improve on their times from the first session including Michael Schumacher, Ricardo Zonta and Jenson Button.

Pole position will be fought between Ferrari and McLaren while behind them it seems that there will be a battle between Frentzen, Villeneuve and Ralf Schumacher unless it rains then it is anyone's guess !

Qualifying Session:

David Coulthard grabs pole position ahead of Michael Schumacher and Mika Hakkinen. Rubens Barrichello, Ralf Schumacher and Jarno Trulli make the top 6.

David Coulthard clocked his fastest time moment before it started raining. His time of 1:17.529 is almost 2.5 seconds faster than last year's pole time which was also affected b rain. Pole position time could have been even lower if it had not rained.

Behind the top 4, Ralf Schumacher was again impressive in 5th followed by Jarno Trulli who was one of the few who managed to improve their position in the dying moments of the session stealing 6th place from Giancarlo Fisichella who was also impressive given the lack of pace the Benetton has been lately. Eddie Irvine is another surprise in the top 10 followed by Jacques Villeneuve who expected higher than 9th and Heinz Harald Frentzen wrapping up the top 10. The field is again extremely close apart from the top 4, there is just over a second from 5th all the way to 17th and the changing weather conditions have certainly played a part in that order !

Marc Gene was the first out on the track followed by Rubens Barrichello and Ralf Schumacher. Several drivers go out early just in case it rains.

Order after 10 minutes: Ralf Schumacher, Jos Verstappen, Pedro de la Rosa, Pedro Diniz and Rubens Barrichello.

Minutes later and Michael Schumacher and both the McLaren drivers go out and they immediately take up positions at the top of the timesheets with Michael Schumacher grabbing provisional pole with a time of 1:18.091 followed by Rubens Barrichello and David Coulthard.

20 minutes into the session and the order is Michael Schumacher ahead of Rubens Barrichello and David Coulthard. Frentzen, Hakkinen and de la Rosa make the top 6. All drivers have set competitive times except for Alexander Wurz who went off but managed to return to the pits and Jean Alesi.

With 30 minutes to go and the times started to drop with David Coulthard grabbing provisional pole position with a time of 1:17.529 followed closely by Michael Schumacher and Mika Hakkinen. Rubens Barrichello, Ralf Schumacher and Giancarlo Fisichella make the top 6. It starts to rain and all the cars return to the pits.

No action until 12 minutes to the end of the session as the track was too wet to improve on the times. A few drivers went out only to return back to the pits. Jean Alesi however attempted to go fast but spun and hit the tyre wall !

With just 1 minute to go, all the drivers go out on the track and Jarno Trulli, Jenson Button, Pedro de la Rosa and Alexander Wurz all manage to improve their positions.

So David Coulthard grabs his first pole position of the season ahead of Michael Schumacher and Mika Hakkinen. Rubens Barrichello, Ralf Schumacher and Jarno Trulli make the top 6.

An interesting race tomorrow especially that it is expected to rain again. Instant reactions to changing conditions could be the deciding factor for the race.
