Hungarian Grand Prix Friday Practice Sessions

First Practice Session:

Michael Schumacher sets the fastest time of the session almost half a second faster than team-mate Rubens Barrichello. Eddie Irvine, Ralf Schumacher, Giancarlo Fisichella and Jacques Villeneuve make the top 6.

Most of the activity was in the final 10 minutes with drivers waiting until the racing line has a bit of grip. Neither McLaren driver set a time this session opting to save the tyres for later while Heinz Harald Frentzen appeared to struggle setting a very slow time and ending up slowest. Michael Schumacher's time is under 0.7 seconds slower than the fastest time on Friday last year which was set by Eddie Irvine with a time of 1:19.476.

Gaston Mazzacane did the most number of laps with 19 followed by Jacques Villeneuve with 18 laps. Hakkinen and Coulthard only completed just a single lap.

The session started under dry and warm conditions with the temperature at 26 degree already. Eddie Irvine was the first to go out on his installation lap followed by Gaston Mazzacane. Jenson Button and the 2 Sauber drivers follow.

Several other drivers go out but they all do a single installation lap and return to the pits.

10 minutes into the session and no timed lap has been set yet.

All cars complete their installation lap with the exception of the McLaren's, Ferrari's and the Benetton's.

15 minutes into the session, Gaston Mazzacane is the first to set a timed lap with a time of 1:26.078. On his second lap, he goes off onto the gravel but recovers.

The lap times drop dramatically over the session as the racing line forms and grip increases due to the rubber on the track.

20 minutes into the session and only Gaston Mazzacane has set a time.

Jacques Villeneuve and Jenson Button go out 25 minutes into the session. Villeneuve's first timed lap was actually slower than Mazzacane's! while Button goes fastest on his first lap. Jacques Villeneuve takes top spot on his second lap with a time of 1:24.832 only for Jenson Button to take top spot again with a time of 1:23.653.

30 minutes into the session and it is Jenson Button ahead of Jacques Villeneuve and Gaston Mazzacane.

Pedro Diniz is the next driver to set a timed lap and goes fastest on his second lap. David Coulthard goes out on his installation lap.

35 minutes into the session and Jacques Villeneuve goes fastest with a time of 1:23.218 and a lap later he drops the fastest time by almost a full second to 1:22.264.

20 minutes left in the session and only 6 drivers have set a time so far with Jacques Villeneuve over a second ahead of Pedro Diniz and Jenson Button. Marc Gene, Gaston Mazzacane and Ricardo Zonta make the top 6.

A few more driver go out and Ralf Schumacher goes fastest more than half a second faster than Jacques Villeneuve. Jean Alesi goes into 4th and on his following lap he goes on the grass but recovers.

10 minutes to go and only 10 drivers have set a time with Ralf Schumacher half a second ahead of Jacques Villeneuve. Mika Salo, Pedro Diniz, Jenson Button and Jean Alesi make the top 6.

Rubens Barrichello finally goes out and in 2 laps he goes fastest of all while Jarno Trulli moves into 4th just 0.004 seconds behind Villeneuve.

With 5 minutes to go a few drivers go out including Michael Schumacher who goes fastest with a time of 1:20.773 and Giancarlo Fisichella who moves into 5th place.

Neither McLaren driver set a timed lap this session. Both drivers did complete an installation lap though.

Final Order : Michael Schumacher almost half a second faster than team-mate Rubens Barrichello. Eddie Irvine, Ralf Schumacher, Giancarlo Fisichella and Jacques Villeneuve make the top 6.

 Second Practice Session:

McLaren dominate the second session with strong performances from both David Coulthard and Mika Hakkinen. Michael Schumacher was 3rd just 0.346 seconds behind Coulthard while Rubens Barrichello was over a second slower than Coulthard in 4th place. Jarno Trulli and Giancarlo Fisichella make the top 6.

While the times today are not very significant as the teams run different settings, it is interesting to note that both McLaren's have set times under the 1:19 mark, both Ferrari's have set times under the 1:20 mark and the rest of the field are above 1:20. Gaston Mazzacane's time is outside the 107% mark, 5.737 seconds behind David Coulthard.

Apart from McLaren and Ferrari, it appears that Jordan and Williams are strong along with Fisichella in the Benetton, Wurz is in 16th a full second slower than his team-mate. The Prost team are also looking better than they have been recently with Heidfeld in 11th and Alesi in 13th.
Jaguar looked promising in the first session but couldn't improve as well as the others with Irvine in 10th and Herbert in 20th and BAR appear to struggle here with the lack downforce with Jacques Villeneuve in 14th and his team-mate in 21st almost a second behind Villeneuve. Both BAR drivers spun during this session.
Arrows also appear to be struggling here as well with both Pedro de la Rosa and Jos Verstappen back in 17th and 18th positions.

Marc Gene did the most number of laps this session with 24 laps while his team-mate did the least with 4 laps as he was struggling with problems. Most drivers did between 19 and 22 laps.

The session started with even warmer conditions, the air temperature was 28 degrees while the track was almost 40 degrees!

Jarno Trulli was the first out this session followed by Gene, Zonta and Alesi. By the 4th minute several drivers improve their positions with Frentzen moving into 11th and Wurz into 12th. Mika Hakkinen also goes out and sets his first timed lap of the day in 20th position then jumps into 4th place on his second lap.

Michael Schumacher improves slightly retaining 1st position.

Order after 10 minutes: Michael Schumacher ahead of Rubens Barrichello and Eddie Irvine. Mika Hakkinen, Ralf Schumacher and Giancarlo Fisichella make the top 6.

Michael Schumacher is the first driver to go under the 1:20 mark followed a minute later by David Coulthard who moves into 2nd place.

15 minutes into the session and David Coulthard goes below the 1:19.5 and takes first position.

Jarno Trulli and Ralf Schumacher are very close fighting for 6th position.

20 minutes into the session and it is David Coulthard ahead of Michael Schumacher and Rubens Barrichello. Eddie Irvine, Mika Hakkinen and Ralf Schumacher make the top 6.

Michael Schumacher improves and is only 0.033 seconds behind David Coulthard. Rubens Barrichello still in third but improves his time to go under the 1:20 mark. Giancarlo Fisichella moves into 4th place.

Michael Schumacher and David Coulthard start exchanging fastest laps.

30 minutes into the session and it is Michael Schumacher ahead of David Coulthard and Mika Hakkinen. Rubens Barrichello, Giancarlo Fisichella and Eddie Irvine make the top 6.

Mika Hakkinen goes second .002 ahead of David Coulthard and 0.076 behind Michael Schumacher. Very close!

A lap later David Coulthard is the first to go under the 1:19 mark with a time of 1:18.812. Jarno Trulli moves back into 6th place while Jacques Villeneuve improves to 10th after dropping back to 15th.

40 minutes into the session and it is David Coulthard ahead of Michael Schumacher and Mika Hakkinen. Rubens Barrichello, Giancarlo Fisichella and Ralf Schumacher make the top 6.

Mika Hakkinen moves into second place going under the 1:19 mark while Jarno Trulli moves into 5th. Ricardo Zonta improves from 21st to 19th only to spin and stall a lap later!. Eddie Irvine also spins but manages to recover.

10 minutes remaining and it is David Coulthard ahead of Mika Hakkinen and Michael Schumacher. Rubens Barrichello, Jarno Trulli and Giancarlo Fisichella make the top 6.

The top 6 remained static mainly due to the several incidents on the track with Pedro de la Rosa spinning and crashing into the tyre barriers and Jacques Villeneuve spinning but recovering.
