The Heretic

24 March: Following the unanimous approval by the teams, the World Motor Sport Council approved the minor change to the Qualifying format. Under this change, the format on Saturday will change as follows:

Saturday Practice sessions will start 1 hour earlier (at 9:00 and 10:15)
Qualifying Part 1 will start at 13:00
Qualifying Part 2 will start at 14:00.

The main purpose of this change is to allow TV networks to show only the second Qualifying (if they want) and allow the teams more time to set-up their cars between the 2 parts. (Previously there was only a 2 minute delay between the end of Part 1 & 2)

19 March: Malaysian Formula 1 Grand Prix - Thursday Press Conference from the FIA

17 March: The FIA propose a small change to the Qualifying session format following a request by Formula One Management (FOM). The proposal is to have the first part of Qualifying start at 13:00 and the second part at 14:00 PM rather the waiting only 2 minutes between the 2 parts. This proposal must be unanimously agreed to by the teams and if accepted the new procedure could be introduced at the Bahrain Grand Prix.
T he FIA press release read:

Qualifying at the Malaysian Grand Prix will follow the same format as in Melbourne.

In order to facilitate television scheduling, the Commercial Rights Holder has requested that:

(i) the qualifying procedure should begin at 13.00 local time instead of 14.00; and

(ii) qualifying proper (ie for the grid) should begin at 14.00 local time rather than immediately after the end of the timed laps which determine the order in which cars qualify for the grid.

The schedule would then be:

Qualifying procedure begins 13.00 Qualifying for the grid 14.00

If the competing teams agree unanimously to this revised schedule, it will be put to the Formula One Commission by a fax vote. If the Commission is in favour and the World Motor Sport Council confirms the decision at its meeting on 24 March, the new schedule could be introduced from the Bahrain Grand Prix. In all other respects, the qualifying procedures would remain as published
