Jackie Stewart recently supported Coulthard and said that if he maintains his current form then he has a very good chance to win the World Championship. Michael Schumacher on the other hand still considers Mika Hakkinen as his main title contender. What do you think ?  (What others are saying)

What others are saying:

I hope Coulthard wins it. Schumacher is a big whiner/crybaby. He expects everyone to let him through so he can win. What is the use of having other drivers out there? I use to like him when I was introduced to F1 but after I have watched it for about 2 years, I can't stand him. His ego is way out of control. The way he critized Montoya after the race at Austria gave me even more reason to hate him and his ego. I hope Montoya puts him into a wall next race. Anyways, I feel better now... Clay - US

I believe that DC could take the title this year as he has shown sheer determination and whilst having a few unlucky races, he always seems to come out on top.  As long as the McLaren team do not place unpublicised team orders to disadvantage him and everything goes well, then this could be his year for success - Hazel - England

David has the potential to win, and he possibly could do it this year, that is if he concentrates more on driving than moaning and whinging about Schumi.  David if you were in Schumi's position in France, you would have done exactly the same.  Get on with driving, and stop sulking and moaning - Jules - England

I agree with Mr. J.S. that David. C. need only maintain his current form to clinch the drivers championship. I am, may I add an avid McLaren (Hakkinen) fan and I would dearly love to see my main man (Mika) win another drivers title. I have watched F1 since the sixties and have yet to see a driver with the same capabilities as the late great MR SENNA. Only two drivers have come close and that is Jacques Villeneuve and "MIKA" and I feel that in time, (maybe 2 years) so will David Coulthard. Thanks for reading this, I hope Michael BOOmuacher fans (yes, boomuacher) will agree.....some hope!!! - AlanB - Australia

David Coulthard can win the championship because he is a talented driver. Now, back to reality. Whether the McLaren team wants to admit it or not, they will favor one driver when it comes down to winning, because it is a business, and all teams are out to win. Mika is a two time World Champion, while David is not. Thinking of the odds on who could win next, who should the team put their faith in. I believe that if David can stay ahead of Mika in the points, then the team in the end will have to concede to David. But not without a lot of heat from Mika. I believe that David is a lot stronger then Mika in a lot of areas. In fact I think that weighing it all out, I just may have to say David is better overall. Mika's advantage is qualifying, and that's about it. He loses faith early, if he is not where he is supposed to be, in the front.

In regards to Michael's comment about Hakkinen, well Schumacher has been in the business a while, I think he understands that Mika will have all the advantages that David doesn't. I don't think it was mind games, I think he knows that Mika is the competition, because McLaren wants it to be that way. And that's the only reason.

Having said all that, I think this will be a Michael Schumacher year, and I having been a fan since the first F1 race I ever watched 5 years ago, I will be whooping for joy- Nicki - Canada.

With his well deserved win in Monaco, David is on a high at the moment. He has the capability and is on a high. I think he can do it.  Mika is doing himself a lot of damage at the moment and he is considerably reducing his will to win. Tough but true.  McLaren is going well and will continue to do so.  If Michael convinces himself that Mika is really his danger then David will take his first championship.  Does he have a disadvantage?  Decidedly so!!  He is a gentleman racer but hopefully his present high can sustain that as well.  Good luck David !! - Ian M. - Australia.

Coulthard is in a small group of drivers that could win any race on any giving day. However, he is not the best qualifier (Hakkinen) nor the best overall driver (Schumacher). What this means is if Coulthard continues to have good luck he can win the championship. Nobody is that lucky. My money is on Schumacher ! - Mike R. - USA.

Although I am a Schuey fan, Coulthard deserves a good year, especially as Hakkinen cannot really be regarded as a 2 time champion under his own effort as Coulthard handed points to Mika both times Mika was declared champion - A.P. M. - Luxembourg.

I don't think Coulthard can win the Driver's championship but McLaren need him for the Constructor's championship. He has the capability to win a few races now and then but he is definitely not as talented as Schumacher or Hakkinen. I am sure that either Schumacher or Hakkinen will become three time World Champion by the end of this season - Vandana - India.

As long as Coulthard is # 2, regardless of what Ron Dennis publicly states, the team will emphasize testing and development to suit Hakkinen first then David.  This is not a bad strategy figuring McLaren needs a world champion and a constructors title to have the perfect season. You need two strong drivers and cars to get constructor points and you need one driver that clearly is the leader for the drivers championship - Nick G - USA.

My opinion is "Yes" he has a chance to get the Championship. Why? Because of Michael Schumacher. Why do I say that? Look at the last two years, Hakkinen used to be in the lead and it was fairly easy to win the championship but not through a fierce battle. Now the Ferrari has been able to catch up. We can see that in every race this season whether it is a fast track or a slow track. I see Coulthard always putting a good performance. Because Schumacher's car failed, David's McLaren is there to take the lead. I think Coulthard seems better than Hakkinen when it comes to being aggressive. According to this I guess that we would have a fierce battle between Schumacher and Coulthard in the near future - Humane W - Taiwan.

I feel David can win the championship this year, if Ron Dennis lets him. I think it is time for Mika to shut up and let David take the prize period....... Larry Z - USA.

Coulthard is the occasional burst of flame - he is good, no doubt, but sadly lacking the class of M Schumacher and Hakkinen.  Coulthard could be a World Champion in time to come, but unlikely to be within this year, or next.   McLaren has let down Hakkinen far more times than Ferrari for Schumacher.  My guess is Schumacher to gain his 3rd World Championship win this year.  How about Coulthard crossing over to Ferrari next year - then it will be fun, and his championship would be nearer - he certainly has the potential - Wan J - Singapore.

Coulthard has won in Monaco and this shows his better performance. I believe he'll win if he keeps in such a performance. I'm a Mika Hakkinen admirer, but I think he'll lose his chance to win if he couldn't improve his performance. I hope that both of them can do their best for McLaren - Dian - Indonesia.

David Coulthard ? In a McLaren, sure, he could vie for the World Drivers Championship, but in a different car, it would be doubtful. Yes, the McLarens are the fastest, although it is not that reliable.
And yes, he has the skills, although Mika still is undoubtedly better. But, the only reason that he is in second place for the Championship is that he is driving a fast car, and he did benefit from Mika's bad luck in Monaco. Michael Schumacher did it in a Benetton-twice. Jacques Villeneuve did it in a Williams. And David Coulthard COULD do it in a McLaren. But seeing it really, it doesn't make him that much of a hero, does it ? I mean, put Jos Verstappen in a McLaren, and everyone will say he can win the Championship... so what DC's difference?? - Therese R - Philippines.

I think that DC is fully capable of winning the Championship. Yes, we do have to consider that Mika Hakkinen is his teammate, the same Mika Hakkinen that won the current Championship, but I think that David deserves this limelight. He has been in Mika's shadow for so long, apart from a few races, but he is good. No one can ever deny that. He has the capacity to be better than Mika in the near future.
I am a Ferrari fan, and I still want Michael to win this year, and if ever he does, McLaren's number 2 car won't be far behind - Ria R - Philippines.

I do not think that Coulthard could win the championship. Given current form - he
does look exceptionally good - but definitely does not posses Schumacher's or for that matter even Hakkinen's driving skills. McLaren might have given him a really good car but for now - my bet is on Schumacher, followed by Hakkinen. Of course, I do not for a second undermine his capability and on his day, he can beat the best - Karthik - India.

My 4 year old son could win in those McLarens - Angelo - Canada.

Coulthard (on a good day) is as good as any of the F1 drivers (except Schumacher) and, given the McLaren's capability could win the championship. This would however require both Schumacher (the best driver) and Hakkinen (the best qualifier) to both fail to capitalise on their skills.
In today's non-passing environment reliability plus strategy (Schumacher) or Qualifying (Hakkinen) are all that counts. If these two finish enough races, one of them will win - Geoff H - Australia.

Michael may be playing mind games in the eyes of many but Hakkinen isn't the double world champion for nothing. Coulthard had demonstrated in the past that he can make silly mistakes (Austria last year is a perfect example) and eventually Hakkinen will take preference because ultimately he is the best McLaren driver. Coulthard may win a world championship at some point but until he either goes to another team or Mika retires, then he doesn't stand a chance - Adam B - Australia.

David Coulthard definitely has a chance to win but not absolutely. I think Michael has more chances to win the world championship coz the way he and his car are performing this season makes it obvious - Kiran - USA

I certainly agree with Jackie Stewart even though I must admit that I was very disappointed with David Coulthard last year especially when he took out Hakkinen twice. This year though he does seem to be much better and we have yet to seem put a foot wrong. I would certainly like to see him challenge Michael Schumacher for the title. Keep in mind that he is one of a few drivers who have overtaken Michael Schumacher on the track under race conditions.

As for Michael's comments that it is Hakkinen who he fears most, well that is typical of his mind games - Tim H. - Australia
