A difficult call to provide any meaningful analysis. Most of the results were as expected but there were a few surprises.

Malaysia will prove interesting to see how many of the surprises in this session were related to rain and how much was performance based. Any situation that allows MS to be outqualified by Ruben's (even by 5 thousandths of a second) suggests significant outside influence - in this case the weather lottery. To see Ralf almost a second quicker than JPM and Massa convincingly outqualifying Heidfeld suggests that we will have to wait to see what happens on the hopefully more level playing field at Sepang.

And the Also Ran award goes to: Nick Heidfeld

Picture this, You are the teams top gun and your opponent is a rookie. You have a chip on your shoulder because McLaren chose that other rookie instead of you. How do you show the world what you are made of? Well, if you are Nick Heidfeld, you let the new rookie outqualify you by a quarter of a second.

Congratulations Nick, you are our Australian GP 'Also Ran' winner.

The Australian GP Qualifying Heroes

1. Giancarlo Fisichella, 2. Mark Webber, 3. Ralf Schumacher
