Canadian Grand Prix Friday Practice Sessions

First Practice Session:

Michael Schumacher sets the fastest time for the first practice session just 0.094 seconds ahead of teammate Rubens Barrichello. David Coulthard was 3rd ahead of his teammate Mika Hakkinen while the Jaguar pair of Eddie Irvine and Johnny Herbert make the top 6.

There is around a 0.5 seconds between Michael Schumacher and David Coulthard. Mika Hakkinen is almost another 0.5 seconds behind. Michael Schumacher's time is 0.8 seconds slower than the fastest time set on Friday last year with yet another session to go.

The session started with most drivers doing an installation lap in the first few minutes. Gaston Mazzacane is the first to set a timed lap in the 8th minute with a time of 1:28.735.

15 minutes into the session and it is Jean Alesi ahead of Jos Verstappen, Gaston Mazzacane, Marc Gene, Nick Heidfeld and Pedro de la Rosa. They are the only drivers who set timed laps so far. Nick Heidfeld makes a mistake and crashes his Prost into the wall.

20 minutes into the session and it is Pedro de la Rosa ahead of Jenson Button and Jos Verstappen. Only 7 drivers have set timed laps. Ricardo Zonta spins but manages to recover. Jean Alesi suffers an engine problem and heads back slowly to the pits. Michael Schumacher goes out for the first time.

Order after 30 minutes: Jos Verstappen ahead of Ricardo Zonta and Jenson Button. Pedro de la Rosa, Gaston Mazzacane and Marc Gene make the top 6.

Ralf Schumacher is finally on the track for an installation lap. He is driving in his car for the first time after his crash in Monaco.

40 minutes into the session and it is Rubens Barrichello ahead of Johnny Herbert and Mika Hakkinen. Jos Verstappen, Pedro de la Rosa and David Coulthard make the top 6. Ralf Schumacher is the only driver without a timed lap. Zonta makes another mistake but this time he hits the barrier.

With 10 minutes to go, it is Rubens Barrichello ahead of Michael Schumacher and Mika Hakkinen. David Coulthard, Johnny Herbert and Jacques Villeneuve make the top 6. Ralf Schumacher goes on track again but pits before setting a timed lap. Michael Schumacher and Rubens Barrichello trade fastest laps.

 Second Practice Session:

David Coulthard sets the fastest time ahead of Michael Schumacher and Rubens Barrichello. Johnny Herbert, Mika Hakkinen and Jarno Trulli make the top 6.

Just 0.02 seconds separate the top 3 who appear to be on their own with more than half a second to the surprising Johnny Herbert. Mika Hakkinen struggled all day and is more than 0.75 seconds behind his teammate.

The fastest time today is slightly slower than the time set here last year. Drivers did not improve much during the second session mainly due to rising temperatures. 1 second separates the top 8 and 2 seconds separate the top 18.

Encouraging news for Jaguar with both their drivers in the top 10 while it has been a bad start for Williams with Jenson Button in 16th position and Ralf Schumacher in 21st. Alexander Wurz continues to struggle finishing 18th fastest while his teammate Giancarlo Fisichella was 9th. Ricardo Zonta is also struggling finishing in 20th place while his teammate Jacques Villeneuve is in 10th place.

The session started with most drivers on track. Jean Alesi was the first to improve on the time he set in the first session. Rubens Barrichello and Michael Schumacher trade fastest laps again. Ralf Schumacher goes out 8 minutes into the session and only does 1 lap and then pits.

10 minutes into the session and Michael Schumacher is 0.012 seconds ahead of Rubens Barrichello with David Coulthard in 3rd place.

Ralf Schumacher finally puts in a timed lap but is down in 21st place just ahead of Nick Heidfeld who is yet to set a time during this session following his crash in the first session.

Order after 20 minutes: Michael Schumacher, Rubens Barrichello, David Coulthard, Mika Hakkinen, Jean Alesi and Giancarlo Fisichella. Marc Gene in 8th place !, Coulthard spins but recovers.

Halfway into the session and it is Michael Schumacher ahead of Rubens Barrichello and David Coulthard. Mika Hakkinen, Giancarlo Fisichella and Eddie Irvine make the top 6. Marc Gene spins and touches the barrier but manages to continue. Giancarlo Fisichella spins but recovers.

With 20 minutes remaining in the second session, David Coulthard goes fastest ahead of Michael Schumacher and Rubens Barrichello. Only 0.02 seconds separates the top 3. Nick Heidfeld is back on track !
