5-Feb: Ferrari have hit trouble on their first day of testing at Mugello. Michael Schumacher started testing in the morning on a wet track but had to stop 6 laps later after a problem with the injection system was discovered. The team had to remove the engine to fix the problem and then decided to resume testing tomorrow. Schumacher did a best time of 1:35.119 with wet tyres.

Niki Lauda is expected to take a senior role at Ford by taking the Chief Executive Officer role at the Premier Performance Division which groups Jaguar Racing, Cosworth Racing and Pi Electronics. This division is part of the Premier Group which includes Volvo, Land Rover and Aston Martin.
Bobby Rahal said "We've got three separate organisations and Niki Lauda will bring those together. Niki coming in will be good because it allows me to concentrate on my job which is to get respectability for Jaguar Racing."
An official announcement is expected soon.

5-Feb: Mercedes sports director, Norbert Haug has put the blistering pace of Ferrari's new F2001 down to the performance of tyres and said "I don't think that one team has suddenly found the philosopher's stone!. We are not worried, because our car will also be quicker than last year's. Improvements to the car bring you at the most a couple of tenths of a second, the rest comes from the tyres. Bridgestone seem to have worked really well, but we've got the same tyres as Ferrari."
Haug is not worried about the late launch of the McLaren challenger as they have tested all the major components on the hybrid car and said "We wanted to finish the wind-tunnel work, but all the most important components have been successfully tried out on the track and the car is now ready for testing. Our engine is still the benchmark for the others, I don't think you'll find one that is smaller, lighter or more powerful"
McLaren launches their 2001 challenger on the 7th of February.

3-Feb: The third and final day of testing for Michael Schumacher at Fiorano saw him set a time below the 59 second mark and breaking the 1997 record he set  on the 2nd of May of that year. Schumacher completed 55 laps and practiced 3 pits stops as he continued development work on the new F2001.
Michael Schumacher takes a one day break and then moves to Mugello to start testing on Monday.

Just days after Jean Alesi in the Ferrari powered Prost set a new lap record at Barcelona, Rubens Barrichello in the F1-2000 slashed that record by almost four tenths. He was the only driver today to drop below the 1:19 mark. Nick Heidfeld in the the Sauber (also powered by Ferrari) was second fastest over half a second slower while Enrique Bernoldi in the Arrows was 3rd.
6 teams were present with 9 drivers setting lap times. Nick Heidfeld covered the most number of laps with 98 Darren Manning in the BAR with 69 and Olivier Panis with 68.
Kimi Raikkonen had the least number of laps with 13 as his car had a suspension problem. Giancarlo Fisichella only covered 29 laps as Benetton continues to problems with the new B201. 
The Barcelona mega test has ended. The teams will now move to different circuits  from Kyalami in South Africa to Estoril in Portugal. The Testing page lists all the upcoming test sessions.

2-Feb: After setting the fastest time at the Fiorano track since May 97', Michael Schumacher slashed another two tenths of a second today and covered a massive 102 laps. Michael Schumacher was once again very please with the progress and said "The times do not mean much as a lot depends on the tyres. Bridgestone has really done a good job. The most important thing is that the car has immediately proved itself very reliable. Furthermore, the car reacts well and feels solid. I am very happy and I must compliment the engineers who have done a fantastic job."
Meanwhile Fabrizio Giovanardi (standing in for Luca Badoer) concluded his testing at the Viarano main straight where he concentrated on aerodynamic testing. He completed a total of 32 runs.

Olivier Panis has once again topped the timesheets on day 13 of testing at Barcelona. Panis continues testing the modified 2000 car while his teammate Jacques Villeneuve tests the 2001 car. Villeneuve's time was over a second slower than that of Panis. Heinz Harald Frentzen was the second fastest of the day 0.7 seconds behind Panis while Rubens Barrichello was third almost a second off the pace.
6 teams were present with 9 drivers setting lap times. Jacques Villeneuve covered the most number of laps with 80 followed by Rubens Barrichello with 68 and Heinz Harald Frentzen with 65.
Giancarlo Fisichella covered the least number of laps as he continues testing the B201. He only managed 16 laps and was over 3 seconds off the pace.
Testing continues tomorrow.

The Arrows team has successfully shaken down the new A22 at Silverstone. Jos Verstappen covered 15 laps without any serious problems although the team got a scare on the first lap when the car had smoke coming out of it. The team will now move to Estoril for a full test of the car.

1-Feb: The new Ferrari F2001 made it's debut at the Fiorano track today with Michael Schumacher behind the wheel. The initial signs seem to be very positive as Schumacher completed a total of 68 laps with a best time of 59.505.
Schumacher said at the end of the day "The first impression is very good, the car is very competitive. The times are very good, thanks also to the new Bridgestone tyres which perform better than last year's. The car handles well and seems reliable. We did a lot of laps without any problems and that is a good sign. The plan was to do several runs of around five or six laps each, to try and build up the mileage. We made a few changes to the set-up to see how the car reacted." Schumacher continues testing at Fiorano tomorrow.
Ferrari are aslo testing at Barcelona with Rubens Barrichello (covered below) and at the Vairano main straight with Fabrizio Giovanardi concentrating on aerodynamic testing.

On day 12 of testing at Barcelona, Olivier Panis returns to the top of the timesheets in the BAR 002 ahead of Rubens Barrichello in the F1-2000 and Jarno Trulli in the EJ11 (2001 car). 
7 teams were present with 9 drivers setting lap times. Kimi Raikkonen covered the most number of laps with 99 followed by Jacques Villeneuve with 97 and Jarno Trulli with 90. They were all running 2001 specification cars.
Panis was the only driver to set a time below the 1:20 mark and was over half a second faster than Barrichello. Unfortunately, Panis crashed his car just after 5 pm local time due to a brake failure, luckily he was unhurt.
Giancarlo Fisichella shookdown the B201 and ran for 6 laps. He set a time over 6 seconds off the pace.
Juan Pablo Montoya drove the FW23 for the first time but only managed 33 laps and suffered a number of problems reducing his overall track time. This was the last day of testing for Williams at Barcelona as they prepare for their next session at Kyalami from the 8th to the 13th of February alongside BAR.
