8-Oct: Following the US strikes on Afghanistan, there was mounting speculation that the Japanese Grand Prix will be called off. The FIA issued a statement denying any truth to these rumours. The statement read "Information circulated on the internet suggesting that the Japanese Grand Prix is in doubt is completely untrue. The Japanese Grand Prix will take place as scheduled on 12, 13, and 14 October."

6-Oct: At Fiorano, Luca Badoer and the Ferrari team concluded their final test of the season. Badoer continued the program of testing new components for the 2002 season as well as tyre evaluation for the upcoming Japanese GP. Badoer completed 117 laps with a best time of 59.580.
The session was run under cloudy but dry conditions.

At Barcelona, the Williams enjoyed a 4th day of testing on their own. Marc Gene and Antonio Pizzonia drove for the team. Marc Gene ran the 2002 specification BMW engine and the team was satisfied with the initial results. The team did not release lap times for the final day.

6-Oct: Max Mosley has re-elected President of the FIA for the third consecutive time for a further four-year  term by the FIA General Assembly which met in Cologne in Germany.
Max Mosley, 61, was firstly elected President of the FISA (Federation Internationale du Sport Automobile), the FIA's then sport division, in 1991 and re-elected in 1992. In 1993, after the re-organisation of the FIA under which the FISA disappeared, Max Mosley was elected President of the FIA for the first time. He was then re-elected in 1997 and again today.

Following his recent tests at Fiorano, Michael Schumacher has indicated that he is happy with Ferrari's revolutionary new gearbox and said "I am very happy with the work we have done this week. It's been a while that we wanted to try something revolutionary and we did it with the new gearbox. Given the first results we have achieved with new components - and the gearbox was the not the only new thing we tried - I am optimistic about next year."
As for the last race in Japan, Michael believes Ferrari will be very competitive and will do everything possible to get Barrichello into second place in the Drivers' championship and said "I expect a really close fight in Japan and I am happy about that. The track should suit the Ferrari very well. Even if it will be a difficult target to reach, we will do everything to get Rubens to second place in the World Championship."
Rubens Barrichello must win in Japan and David Coulthard must not finish higher than 5th for Rubens to finish second in the Drivers' Championship.

Following the race at Indy he clearly stated that he is not retiring and at Fiorano where he is currently testing, he again indicated that he enjoys racing and wants to continue and said "I think I have already said a lot on this subject. I went through some difficult moments at Monza, but it was enough to go back home to my family to realise that life must go on. I want to continue racing and I really enjoy it. Unfortunately, the USA Grand Prix was not the best for me or Rubens, but I reckon that come Japan we can have a better weekend, on a track where we have a good chance of winnings not considering retirement."
