Dear Heretic,

I can't say that I agree with your summation on the Montoya/Coulthard incident. In this sport/(business?) you create your own luck or welfare. At this point in the race I think his main concern should have been to at least finish and hopefully in the points if possible. I just don't think Montoya has the ability to drive according to the bigger picture which is surely to score as much points as you can if you can't win. And he was not going to win, that was for sure. He was driving an ill handling car due to the incident with Ralph on the first corner and he was struggling with extreme tyre wear. There is just no way he could have hoped to keep Coulthard at bay. He should have let Coulthard pass and resumed the battle (if possible) once he had better tyres. At least he then would have had a chance of finishing in the points.
Remember Michael in last year's Spanish GP? When he was on bad tyres he let Mika through. He stayed in the race and got his points (actually a lot more than he bargained for at the time). But then again, maybe one should not expect Montoya to be as cool headed as Michael is as he is clearly not in the same class. Montoya may be good at times but he certainly is not great. He never will be. He is not a complete enough racer. As Michael is. Or for that matter Senna and Prost were. It is these small things that makes the difference between good and great. If he had been more level headed he could have been very secure in second place by now. This is the kind of incident you'd expect from Alex Yoong -not Montoya. This makes Montoya just another racer - not an outstanding one. An experienced driver of world champion calibre just don't get caught up in situations like this. Sure he made a mistake (I think) but he just keeps on making them - he does not learn!! And he is going to make a good deal more! I just hope he does not mame (or even worse) somebody in the process. Regards - Johan M - South Africa (Reference Heretic 4-19 - I don't mind being right...)

The Heretic replies:

Montoya has the ability to win races. He just seems to lack the ability to judge which one or when not to compete. It is only when he realises that determination and talent alone will not win races that he has a chance.

The question is: Does he have the ability to strategise on the track?

The Heretic
