Are Williams becoming the dominant team ?

Before the season started, everyone was saying that it will be another fight between Ferrari and McLaren with Williams, Jordan and BAR possibly closing the gap a little and perhaps snatching a win or two towards the end of the season.
After the Australian Grand Prix, it was thought that Ferrari will run away with the championship as McLaren appeared to be struggling while Williams, Jordan and BAR could only do anything if Ferrari ran into trouble. The Malaysian GP made this assumption more obvious.
After the Brazilian GP though, it appeared that things are changing fast. Ferrari were not as dominant while McLaren appeared to have made progress but Williams all of a sudden appeared as an almost equal force. Juan Pablo Montoya could have won the race had it not been for the unfortunate accident with Jos Verstappen.
Speculation was that Ferrari had a setup problem and they would bounce back.
At San Marino, Ferrari struggled again, sure Barrichello finished 3rd but is that a good result ? McLaren grabbed the first 2 positions but failed to win. It was a Williams that led from the first lap until the finish and won on merit. Even if Michael Schumacher didn't have problems, it would be very unlikely that he would have passed Hakkinen and Coulthard and his brother. Keep in mind that it was Michael who ended up with the wrong tyre choice (according to Jean Todt).
In any case, the speed by which Williams and BMW have reached this level only indicates that they have a fair bit to go yet before they reach their peak while both Ferrari and McLaren are trying to stay there.

Ralf Schumacher has certainly demonstrated his ability to become a World Champion while Juan Pablo Montoya has shown us what he is capable of in Brazil. Do you think that those two are ready to dominate ? Or is it too early to write Ferrari and McLaren off ? Have Your Say   (What others are saying)

We might see a new season start in Spain.  All the teams have been testing with Traction Control and some like Ferrari (I suspect) have been using it in a disguised management system for some time.  It will be interesting to see how things change.  Also, if it is to be a year for wet races, power won't mean as much as tires and strategy.  This could be one of the most exciting seasons in recent times.  Let's all pray for a safe one! - Dave M - USA

It is pretty frustrating for the McLaren fan I am to see how well the Williams has got it together so far. Both Ferrari and McLaren should know by now that this is not a two-team battle for the top slot, and unless they really do something to stop this succession of events, it may well become a ...one-team battle: Williams. While Ralf did not have much to do during the race (as David Coulthard did not seem to be able to catch him, and he couldn't even think of a pass), we could all see that Montoya did not seat in his place like Mika Hakkinen did: his pass on Jarno Trulli was the most beautiful pass of the race, they really fought for a couple of corners. So, Williams has got what it takes to win: an excellent chassis, a strong engine, two very determined pilots... If the Michelin folks do their jobs right, I really don't see much of other teams getting past Williams

Whilst I am very happy to see Williams performing well, it is FAR too early to call them the dominant team.

The Michelin tyre appeared to have the edge on the soft Bridgestone at Imola and I am pretty sure that we will see the 'edge' swing from race to race.

Additionally we have to factor in the regulation changes that are coming into force and the fact that Williams/Michelin are likely to perform 'poorly' in the wet and, most likely on high downforce circuits.

All in all, I think we have a genuine three team battle for honours this season, if I were a betting man, my money would still be on the McLarens - Dunder - Hong Kong

You just have to look at the way Ralf and JPM are driving, if JPM wasn't punted off in brazil Williams BMW would have won 50% of the grands prix this year. I'll leave this for you to figure out - Chris - Australia

I realize there are a lot of things that affect the fortunes of a Formula One team and with staff moving about between teams one would expect some up and down periods however oddly enough, with the Williams team they almost seem to follow a definite pattern. Since 1982 Williams has won 6 World Championships and these have come in groups with the first win in each group being separated by roughly 4-5 years.
1982-Jones to 1987-Piquet (5 years)
1987-Piquet to 1992-Mansell (5 years)
1992-Mansell to 1996-Hill (4 years)
If that holds true they should be winning another in either 2001 or 2002.
Hmmm...they seem to be right on schedule - Lawrence J - Canada
