Jean Alesi has announced that he will not be driving in Formula 1 next year. This follows that announcement that Takuma Sato signed for Jordan to drive alongside Giancarlo Fisichella in 2002.
Alesi moved to Jordan from the Hungarian GP this season following his public row with Alain Prost. His move was seen as a chance to kick-start his career with long time friend Eddie Jordan. Well it appears that Eddie Jordan only had Alesi in mind for the last 5 races of the season.

Alesi started in Formula 1 in 1989 with the Tyrell team where he finished 9th in the World Championship. In '95 he won his first and only race with Ferrari and his best years in the championship were '96 and '97 when he finished 4th in both years with the Benetton team, but his career took a sharp downturn from there onwards finishing 11th in '98 and 15th in '99 with Sauber and failing to score a single point last season with Prost. During his career, Alesi has raced in 200 GP's and the Japanese GP will be his 201st. Only 4 other drivers in Formula 1 history have raced in more events.

Early in his career he was regarded as a future champion, he moved to Ferrari in only his 3rd year in Formula 1 but Ferrari weren't in top form at the time. After 5 years, he moved to Benetton just when Michael Schumacher went to Ferrari taking with him a number of key people from Benetton. It seems that Alesi was never in the right team at the right time.

Alesi is a natural driver and hates any form of driver aids and that might explain the reason why his performance has been dropping in the last few years compared to his younger team-mates who adapted to the new style of Formula 1 driving.

It will be sad to see Alesi leave Formula 1 for he is one of the few drivers who shows his emotions in good times and bad. Rarely would we see a driver doing doughnuts after finishing 5th. (Alesi in Canada 2001).
Did Alesi leave it too late to leave Formula 1. Do you think he could have done better than what his record suggests ? Will he move on to another formula or will he just stop racing ?

What others are saying:

Jean Alesi has been my favourite formula 1 driver since 1991, when I was only 11. I have followed his career intensely and I have enjoyed all the years he had inspirational races. His results did not match up to his talent, but I believe it was simply his desire for sheer driving pleasure, which distracted him from winning a great deal. But, he was by far the most interesting driver to watch, and I think it is going to be extremely sad to see him go - Kris W - Australia

I think Jean is the best driver in the Formula 1 world, because he's still an original.....full of passion and F1 is a world of passion...Jean is just unlucky and he could be a champion.. I am still believe in him.....if you leave Jean...the F1 will be empty....I am wishing you personal happiness - Marios N - Cyprus

I will sadly miss jean as John said consistency is make makes a driver great, he did not have the best car over the years but made the most of it by out qualifying his team mates 99% of the time. I was one of the lucky people to have met Jean (1999 Australian Grand Prix) he is one of the nicest people I have ever met. I am really sad to see him go in my opinion if he had the car he could do the job. Good Bye Jean you will be truly missed and god bless you - No1 Alesi Fan - Australia

Jean Alesi WILL be missed!! If you look at the stats, his average qualifying position (of those drivers who have competed in ALL the races this year) is 14.31 (13th place) & his average finishing position is 8.75 with 6 points (12th position), but his avg finish position alone is enough to put him in 4th place! I know, only points count, but, consistency counts in my book also! I just want to add: Jean, good luck in the future and I hope that you will continue to be involved in F1 - John L - USA
