Gasly rejects criticism over Schumacher ski jacket post

Jan.26 (GMM) Pierre Gasly has dismissed criticism over a recent social media post showing him skiing in a vintage Michael Schumacher-era jacket, insisting there was no negative intent.

The Frenchman faced backlash over the winter after sharing an Instagram photo of himself skiing while wearing a classic red Michael Schumacher ‘Marlboro’ Ferrari jacket, with some fans describing the image as insensitive given Schumacher’s 2013 skiing accident, while others raised concerns about the cigarette branding.

Speaking at the presentation of Alpine’s 2026 Formula 1 car, Gasly addressed the controversy when asked by f1-insider.com.

“I’m a big fan of Michael,” Gasly said. “I’ve always respected him. I’ve always been open about the fact that he was one of my idols growing up.”

Gasly added that the jacket was an original piece once worn by Schumacher and explained the personal context behind the photo.

“It was one of his jackets,” he said. “I love skiing. I’ve been doing it since I was a child. It really helps me clear my head.”

While acknowledging the reaction, Gasly rejected suggestions of disrespect.

“Unfortunately, that’s part of the life we lead,” he said. “I’ve always shown that I’m a very respectful person. Michael was and is one of my role models. At no point did I intend to express anything negative.”
