First Saturday Practice Session Report - Results

Michael Schumacher was fastest in the first free practice this morning. He was just over 7/10ths of a second faster than Mika Hakkinen who posted the second fastest time. Mika was 1/5th of a second faster than his team-mate David Coulthard who was third fastest.

Barrichello, who was very fast yesterday did not get a chance to show any real speed before his car expired with a blown engine - relegating him to 8th fastest.

Reliability marred the practice. Barrichello's Ferrari blew an engine, Alonso's Minardi smoked into the pits after one lap and Verstappen parked on the side with a transmission problem. This could well mean that we will see many retirements in tomorrow's race.

The Honda powered cars are looking a lot better with three currently performing in the top 6.

The pace is astounding with 11 cars faster than last year's pole time. At this rate we may see qualifying times below 1minute 27 seconds this afternoon.

Enrique Bernoldi covered the most number of laps with 17 followed by Jacques Villeneuve with 15 and Tarso Marques and Olivier Panis with 14 laps. Kimi Raikkonen failed to complete a single timed lap while Jenson Button only managed 3 laps while Rubens Barrichello only 6 laps as he suffered a blown engine.
