Warm-up Session Report - Results

David Coulthard set the fastest time in the session by setting a sensational time of 1:20.944. Mika Hakkinen was also impressive just 0.073 seconds behind. Michael Schumacher in 3rd was 0.706 seconds off the pace while Rubens Barrichello in 4th was over 1.5 seconds slower than Coulthard. Frentzen was 5th with Ralf Schumacher in 6th place.

Halfway through the session Michael Schumacher topped the timesheets followed by Coulthard. Minutes later Coulthard takes the top spot from Michael. 5 minutes to go and Michael Schumacher retakes the top spot only for David to take it back on his last flying lap.

The gaps in lap times are a bit demoralising for the slower teams. Only the top 3 are within a second and the top 8 are within 2 seconds thanks to the blistering pace of the McLaren's here. The gap between 1st and 22nd is over 5 seconds. At this rate, we could see backmarkers being lapped by lap 20!

There were no major incidents during the session although Tarso Marques crashed his car again during the session with 2 minutes to go. An Arrows was stopped on the track on its final run.

Jos Verstappen covered the most number of laps with 17 followed by Rubens Barrichello and Kimi Raikkonen with 16 laps each. Marques only managed 8 laps while Fisichella and Button only covered 9 laps each. Most other drivers covered between 12 and 15 laps.

David Coulthard appears full of confidence heading into the race in the afternoon. The McLarens also appear to be very good in race setup. We'll have to wait and see what Ferrari may have up their sleeve.
