First Friday Practice Session Report - Results

Rubens Barrichello set the fastest time of the session ahead of his team-mate Michael Schumacher. Giancarlo Fisichella was third ahead of David Coulthard, Kimi Raikkonen and Heinz Harald Frentzen.

Barrichello was just 0.061 seconds ahead of Michael Schumacher. Giancarlo Fisichella who usually does well here in Canada was over 0.9 seconds behind Barrichello and it is thought that his fastest run was on a light fuel load. The McLarens of Coulthard and Raikkonen were over 1.2 seconds off the pace while Frentzen managed 6th but also expected to have run on a light fuel load.
Panis in the heavily revised BAR was 7th ahead of an impressive Felipe Massa in his first appearance here. Juan Pablo Montoya managed 9th while Pedro de la Rosa rounded up the top 10.
Ralf Schumacher only managed 16th while Villeneuve was back in 18th. Takuma Sato struggled and only managed 21st on his first appearance at this track while Alex Yoong did the usual by setting the 22nd fastest time and just under 2 seconds slower than his team-mate Mark Webber who also appears here for the first time.

There were no major incidents, however Enrique Bernoldi stopped on the track while Michael Schumacher clipped the wall on the final turn and may have damaged his car.
A number of drivers spun harmlessly during the session.

Felipe Massa covered the most number of laps with 30 followed by Villeneuve with 26. Jenson Button who had problems with his car for most of the session only managed 7 laps while Enrique Bernoldi managed 10 laps before his car stopped. All other drivers covered between 14 and 25 laps.

Although it is very early stages for the Canadian Grand Prix, it does appear that Ferrari will be very hard to beat. It also appears that under these conditions, the Bridgestone tyres have the edge over the Michelins although the second session should give us a better idea.
