Second Friday Practice Session Report - Results

Michael Schumacher continued to dominate the practice sessions with no real competition as his team-mate Rubens Barrichello was sidelined due to his crash from the first session. (A driver cannot use the spare car in practice).
Eddie Irvine was surprisingly second fastest and just over half a second behind Michael but given that everyone else is more than a second slower than Michael, it is likely that Irvine's time was set on lower fuel loads.

The McLarens managed to recover from their poor showing in the morning session with Coulthard managing 3rd and Raikkonen 4th but both were over 1.3 seconds off the pace.
It was Jacques Villeneuve's turn to head the Honda runners managing 5th fastest while Heinz Harald Frentzen impressively put the Sauber in 6th place despite this being the first time he drives the C21 at a race event.

Almost all the drivers spun at one stage or another this session but most recovered. Takuma Sato wasn't one of those as he crashed into the tyre barrier early in the session.
A number of drivers suffered from technical problems with Juan Pablo Montoya and Jenson Button stopping on the track.

The gaps between the drivers are very close. All the drivers (including Michael Schumacher at the top and Alex Yoong at the bottom) are separated by just over 2 seconds while David Coulthard in 3rd is just over a second faster than Oliver Panis in 18th. The 2 practice sessions today have been one of the closest we've seen this season.

In the tyre wars, no tyre supplier appears to have a significant advantage here with 5 Bridgestone runners and 5 Michelin runners occupying the top 10 positions.

Allan McNish covered the most number of laps this session with 31 followed by Michael Schumacher with 30. Barrichello didn't take part in the session while Takuma Sato only managed 4 laps before his off. Juan Pablo Montoya only managed 8 laps as he suffered from technical problems.
Overall today, Mark Webber covered the most number of laps with 48 followed by both Allan McNish and Alex Yoong with 46 laps each. Rubens Barrichello failed to complete any laps while Juan Pablo Montoya only covered 26 laps.

The session was run under mainly cloudy skies and a temperature of 20 degrees.

While the Ferraris appear in a class of their own, the rest of the field is very tight and we should have an exciting day tomorrow.
