First Practice Session:

Mika Hakkinen sets the fastest time of the session almost half a second faster than his teammate David Coulthard in 2nd place. Rubens Barrichello was 3rd followed by his teammate Michael Schumacher. Jos Verstappen and Giancarlo Fisichella make the top 6. The top 3 have set times below the 1:12 mark. Pole position time from last year was 1:10.954

It was a disappointing session for Luciano Burti (Eddie Irvine's replacement) who only managed to do 2 laps and returned to the pits suffering gearbox problems. Verstappen, Wurz and Mazzacane did the most number of laps with 20 each while most other drivers did between 12 and 18 laps.

The session started with most of the drivers going out on their installation lap. The track was dry however there were some wet patches due to heavy rain overnight. Michael Schumacher was one of the drivers electing to go out on wet tyres for his installation lap.

Pedro Diniz is the first to set a timed lap with a time of 1:17.997 while Luciano Burti makes his first ever lap at a Formula 1 Race event.

10 minutes into the session and it is Pedro de la Rosa ahead of Marc Gene and Gaston Mazzacane. They are the only drivers to set a timed lap.

Barrichello takes top spot back while Mika Hakkinen spins 360 degrees but recovers and moments later he goes fastest with a time of 1:12.249 and improves again to 1:11.810.

Mika Salo and Johnny Herbert have big spins at the A1 Kurve but both manage to recover while Giancarlo Fisichella parks his car due to mechanical problems.

With 5 minutes remaining in this 45 minute session, it is Mika Hakkinen ahead of David Coulthard and Jos Verstappen. Rubens Barrichello, Giancarlo Fisichella and Jacques Villeneuve make the top 6.

In the final 5 minutes most of the drivers are on the track as they try to take advantage of the maximum grip levels.
