Second Friday Practice Session Report - Results

While several of the top runners failed to improve on their lap times from the morning session, David Coulthard improved by almost three tenths but the surprise of the session was Eddie Irvine who finished second ahead of Rubens Barrichello (who failed to improve in the second session). Olivier Panis was another surprise in 4th ahead of Michael Schumacher (who improved a tenth) and Mika Hakkinen.

It is certainly too early to claim who got their traction control right from the start and who hasn't, we can only have a better idea after qualifying tomorrow but the pace of Jaguar is certainly encouraging. We don't know if they are running different fuel load but having Eddie Irvine in 2nd after sitting out most of the second session and Pedro de la Rosa in 7th indicates a dramatic improvement with the car. Also BAR for the first time this season have managed to get both their cars ahead of the two Jordans. Again is traction control playing a role here too. Too early to speculate.

Incidents this session saw Tarso Marques in the gravel while the bad luck for Juan Pablo Montoya continues as his Williams suffers an engine failure.

Michael Schumacher covered the most number of laps this session with 25 followed by Jarno Trulli and Fernando Alonso with 23 laps each. Tarso Marques only managed 4 laps before he went off while Montoya only managed 8 before his engine blew. Rubens Barrichello only covered 13 laps while Hakkinen and Villeneuve only managed 14. Most other drivers covered between 15 and 20 laps.

The top 6 runners have already set times faster than the pole time of last year while the top 12 times are faster than the times set on Friday last year. It certainly appears that driver aids are helping in reducing lap times.

It looks like the rest of the weekend will be very interesting!
