Briatore predicts quiet F1 market – except Verstappen

Jun.22 (GMM) Flavio Briatore thinks Formula 1’s driver market may be far less dramatic than many expect.

With speculation swirling around Max Verstappen, Fernando Alonso, Oscar Piastri, Sergio Perez and several other seats, the Alpine executive believes only one major move is realistically on the table.

“I think in the end nothing will happen,” Briatore told Italy’s Auto Moto.

“The only change that could occur is Verstappen going to Mercedes.”

The remark comes amid growing speculation about Verstappen’s future at Red Bull, while Alpine itself has become a key player in the 2027 rumours.

Recent reports linked Alonso with a shock return to Enstone and a reunion with Briatore, although Aston Martin quickly dismissed the claims.

Briatore, still linked with Alonso’s management, made clear he remains a huge admirer of the Spaniard.

“Unfortunately, Fernando doesn’t have a competitive car this year, but as soon as he sees a glimmer of hope, he seizes it,” he said.

“Fernando is a phenomenon, just like Hamilton.

“I think they both contribute a lot to Formula 1. They are true brands.”

At the same time, Briatore insists he is satisfied with Alpine’s current driver lineup of Pierre Gasly and Franco Colapinto.

Colapinto initially struggled at Enstone, but Briatore insisted: “Many wanted him to leave last year, but I defended him, I protected him.

“The boy has talent. Franco has matured a lot. I always ask him if he has a brother, because last year he was a different person.”

Briatore also singled out Gasly for praise. “Pierre is another surprise,” he said.

“Getting to know him, I’ve learned to appreciate him a lot. He’s a guy who demonstrates extraordinary commitment.”

Still, the 76-year-old left the door open to future changes.

“We’re happy with our drivers. We’ll see what happens in the future,” said the Italian.

“Ultimately, my job is to understand how far we can go with the drivers we have and, if necessary, change them. We’ll evaluate the opportunities.”

Sergio Perez has recently been linked with Alpine, Williams and Aston Martin as the 2027 market continues to take shape.
