Magnussen to make NASCAR Cup debut in San Diego

Jun.4 (GMM) Kevin Magnussen will make his NASCAR Cup Series debut later this month after being confirmed for Trackhouse Racing’s special Project 91 entry in San Diego.

The former Formula 1 driver and current World Endurance Championship competitor will drive the No. 91 Chevrolet in the inaugural NASCAR Cup Series race at Naval Base Coronado on June 21.

The event will mark Magnussen’s first NASCAR Cup start.

“I’m incredibly excited and honoured to have the opportunity to compete in NASCAR,” said the Dane.

“What Justin Marks and Trackhouse have done with Project 91 is unique – to provide drivers from outside of the NASCAR world with a chance to compete at this level.

“I’m proud to have this opportunity.”

Trackhouse founder Justin Marks said Magnussen was a natural fit for the initiative, which was created to bring internationally renowned drivers into NASCAR.

“Kevin Magnussen is a global driver, and that’s one of the elements we look for when it comes to running Project 91,” he said.

Magnussen joins a list of Project 91 drivers that includes 2007 Formula 1 world champion Kimi Raikkonen.
