First Friday Practice Session Report - Results

David Coulthard wins the first round in the battle for supremacy here in Canada between himself and Michael Schumacher. As if it was a qualifying session, Michael Schumacher and David Coulthard traded fastest laps but it was Coulthard who put in an amazingly fast lap this early in the event that will ensure we'll have some amazing sessions ahead of us.

The final timesheet shows Barrichello in 2nd place just ahead of his team-mate but he managed to get there on his final run. Behind Coulthard and the 2 Ferrari's is Mika Hakkinen who didn't show the speed we've been used to in the past. He is over 0.8 seconds slower than his team-mate. Surprisingly in 5th is Olivier Panis in the BAR with Heidfeld in 6th and Trulli in 7th ahead of the amazing Kimi Raikkonen.
Disappointment so far from the Williams team with Ralf Schumacher in 9th and Montoya one place behind him in 10th. The Williams pair are the fastest Michelin runners so they might be having problems with their tyres.

The gap between the drivers is huge, a seconds separates the top 4, 2 seconds separate the top 9, 3 seconds separate the top 14.

There was one major incident and that was for local hero Jacques Villeneuve when he appeared to lose the backend and  hit the wall head on. He was ok but his car was heavily damaged.
A number of drivers spun harmlessly with Irvine, Montoya and Fisichella all spinning and recovering.

Juan Pablo Montoya covered the most number of laps with 24 followed by Eddie Irvine and Ralf Schumacher with 22 laps each. Jos Verstappen failed to complete more than an installation lap after a problem was found with his car while Tarso Marques only managed 3 laps and his team-mate Fernando Alonso only managed 6 laps in a nightmare start for the Minardi team. Villeneuve managed 13 laps before he crashed while Mika Hakkinen only did 14 laps. Most drivers covered between 16 and 21 laps.

The fierce competition between the top 2 is evident and with pole time of last year only 0.224 seconds away and we have only completed the first session on Friday, this GP weekend promises to be a battle ground between Coulthard and M Schumacher. We'll need to keep an eye on Williams though.
