First Saturday Practice Session Report - Results

Mika Hakkinen continued his stunning pace here setting the fastest time of the session. David Coulthard was second with Michael Schumacher in 3rd. Those three seem to be in a league of their own with less than a tenth of a second separating them. Rubens Barrichello was 4th over 0.6 seconds off the pace while Ralf Schumacher and Eddie Irvine make the top 6.
Heidfeld, de la Rosa, Raikkonen and Panis make the top 10.

Ricardo Zonta was called in to replace Heinz Harald Frentzen after he didn't feel 100% for the race on Sunday. Frentzen suffered a big crash in practice on Friday. Zonta ended up 13th fastest and over 2.3 seconds off the pace which given the circumstances isn't too bad. Jarno Trulli didn't fare much better settling for 11th fastest.

The nightmare continues for Jacques Villeneuve at his home race as he was unable to complete a single flying lap. On Friday he crashed heavily in the first session and didn't go out in the second.
Montoya didn't have much luck either today as he suffered a mechanical problem early in the session and only managed 5 laps.
Eddie Irvine went out with only 10 minutes remaining but still managed the 6th fastest time after completing only 8 laps.

Michael Schumacher covered the most number of laps with 18 followed by Zonta and Marques with 17. Most drivers covered between 10 and 16 laps.

The competition is intensifying between the top 3 but keep an eye on both Montoya and Irvine for the best of the rest.
