First Saturday Practice Session Report - Results

Michael Schumacher delivered on his comments yesterday that he was not worried being 7th on Friday by setting a stunning lap time of 1:13.729 ahead of David Coulthard and Ralf Schumacher who were the only 2 drivers who managed to set lap times in the 1:14's. Barrichello, Montoya and Trulli make the top 6.

It appears that the top teams are confident for qualifying with Mika Hakkinen not covering a single timed lap and preferring to save his tyres till later while David Coulthard covered just 6 laps. Michael Schumacher and Rubens Barrichello covered just 7 laps each and the Williams pair only did 9 laps each. On the other hand, the Jaguar pair of Eddie Irvine and Pedro de la Rosa covered the most number of laps with 22 and 21 laps respectively!

There were no major incidents during the session however a number of drivers had trips across the gravel including Nick Heidfeld and Luciano Burti.

Michael Schumacher appears in a class of his own although Coulthard is not that far and Williams will be closer with the track getting warmer.
Another very close battle is between Jordan, BAR and Sauber with just 0.408 seconds separating the 6 drivers in 6th to 11th!

After announcing yesterday that they will use the new Renault engine today, Benetton didn't appear to make much improvement this session with Fisichella in 17th and Button in 19th.

Lets see if McLaren and Williams will get closer in the second session.
