Race Report - Results

Mika Hakkinen wins his second race of the season ahead of Michael Schumacher and David Coulthard. Jarno Trulli, Eddie Irvine and Nick Heidfeld make the top 6.

Before the race started, the stewards decided to strip the best qualifying time for Mika Hakkinen after he left the pitlane under a red light condition. He was relegated 4th making it a Schumacher front row. Mika Hakkinen was very angry.

At the start Juan Pablo Montoya had a good start and passed his team-mate and challenged Michael but settled for second. Ralf Schumacher dropped another place to Rubens Barrichello.

Barrichello who was on a 2 stop strategy managed to pass Montoya and then Michael Schumacher to take the lead. He started building a gap to Michael immediately. Meanwhile Montoya was dropping behind Michael and appeared to be holding Ralf Schumacher early in the race. Montoya was on a single stop while Ralf was on 2.

On lap 22 Ralf Schumacher pits for his first stop while Barrichello pits on lap 27 giving Michael Schumacher the lead.
A few laps later Juan Pablo Montoya makes an impressive move on Michael and takes the lead. On lap 36 Montoya pits from the lead and Michael Schumacher takes back the lead.

Ralf Schumacher spins into the gravel and retires while Juan Pablo Montoya suffers an engine failure and stops on the track. Michael Schumacher pits on lap 39 giving the lead to Mika Hakkinen who has yet to stop.

On lap 46 Mika Hakkinen pits and Barrichello who has yet to stop for a second time takes the lead. More importantly, Hakkinen manages to rejoin in second ahead of Michael Schumacher.

On lap 50 Barrichello pits for his second stop giving the lead to Hakkinen. He rejoins in second place. Michael Schumacher was 3rd with David Coulthard in 4th place.

Barrichello starts reducing the gap to Hakkinen and Coulthard reduces the gap to Michael. Barrichello's car gives a few puffs of smoke and he slows down, he lets Michael Schumacher pass him but blocks David Coulthard for a lap. His engine finally blows with 2 laps to go.

So Mika Hakkinen wins the race ahead of Michael Schumacher and David Coulthard. Jarno Trulli breaks his 5 race drought and finishes 4th ahead of Eddie Irvine who drove a strong race starting from 14th while Nick Heidfeld finishes 6th scoring a crucial point for the Sauber team.

With a first and third, McLaren have secured second place after increasing the gap to Williams in the Constructors' Championship to 22 points. They were helped by the fact that neither of the Williams cars finished.
Sauber remain in 4th place with 21 points just 2 points ahead of Jordan who are also 2 points ahead of BAR. Jaguar in 8th place are now just 1 point behind Benetton.
In the Drivers' Championship, David Coulthard now appears more comfortable in second place as he increases his lead over Rubens Barrichello to 7 points.

Update: The race stewards decided to exclude Jarno Trulli from the results of the race due to the skid block beneath his car did not conform to the regulations. The Jordan team will be appealing the decision. If the result stands, Eddie Irvine finishes in 4th ahead of Nick Heidfeld and Jean Alesi. And Jarno Trulli's drought continues. Now 6 races in a row without scoring a point.
This would give Sauber a comfortable lead in 4th place in the Constructors' Championship with a 5 point lead over both BAR and Jordan (22 to 17). Benetton and Jaguar are now equal with 10 points each.

2nd Update: Jordan won the appeal and Trulli's results were re-instated - Story
