First Friday Practice Session Report - Results

Michael Schumacher sets the fastest time of the session ahead of Giancarlo Fisichella and Pedro de la Rosa. Eddie Irvine, Juan Pablo Montoya and Takuma Sato make the top 6.

The session was interrupted by a heavy crash by Rubens Barrichello on his out lap when he hit the wall coming out of turn 13. Ferrari decided not to send out Michael also as a precaution while they investigate the reason for the crash.
Despite that, Michael's time remained fastest by over three tenths. Ferrari will again dominate here.
Behind the Ferraro of Michael Schumacher there are a few surprises. The 2 Jordans (Fisichella - 2nd and Sato - 6th) look strong and so are the Jaguars (de la Rosa - 3rd and Irvine 4th) while there are a few disappointments with Ralf Schumacher back in 17th despite completing 13 laps. He did spin though with 10 minutes to go and lost his rear wing!
The 2 McLarens aren't as fast as expected either with Raikkonen in 9th and Coulthard in 10th.

Mark Webber was impressive setting the 13th fastest time despite driving a Minardi and Heinz Harald Frentzen taking over from Felipe Massa managed 11th fastest in the Sauber and just over two tenths slower than Nick Heidfeld.

One thing that clearly stands out though is how close the times are. Excluding Michael's time in 1st place and Yoong's time in last, just 1.38 seconds separates Fisichella in second and McNish in 18th. It will be fascinating if the gap remains all through the weekend.

Takuma Sato and Alex Yoong covered the most number of laps with 23 following by the impressive Webber with 21. Barrichello failed to complete a lap while Michael Schumacher only covered 4 laps (still he set the fastest time of the session).

The session was run under mainly cloudy skies and a temperature of 18 degrees.

Lets see what the second session brings!
