Qualifying Session Report - Results

Michael Schumacher put in a stunning lap when it mattered most and grabbed pole position for the Brazilian Grand Prix ahead of his brother Ralf Schumacher. Mika Hakkinen was 3rd ahead of Juan Pablo Montoya and David Coulthard. Rubens Barrichello ended up in a disappointing 6th place.

The Jordan pair of Trulli and Frentzen were 7th and 8th followed by the Sauber pair of Heidfeld and Raikkonen. Panis and Villeneuve from BAR were 11th and 12th while Irvine and Burti were 13th and 14th!

Michael Schumacher was never threatened during the session. He grabbed provisional pole in the 24th minute and kept it. Mika Hakkinen and Ralf Schumacher were the only drivers who came close but couldn't do it. In the end Michael set a time that was 0.3 seconds faster than anyone else.

Juan Pablo Montoya failed to capitalise on the fast time he set in practice. He went into his first flying lap in qualifying looking good but lost it, spun and crashed the car into a tyre barrier. Given that he qualified 4th in the spare, he must be reasonably satisfied.

David Coulthard proved that the time he put in yesterday was with less fuel as he failed to make an impression finishing 5th while the biggest disappointment at least from a Brazilian point of view was Barrichello qualifying in 6th place. The top 6 though are very close with only 0.1 second separating 2nd and 6th.

A gap of over 0.4 seconds  to 7th place Trulli who qualified just 0.003 seconds ahead of his team-mate. The Jordan Honda team once again showing that they are better in qualifying that the BAR Honda team who only managed a disappointing 11th and 12th  over 1.2 seconds off the pace and even behind the 2 Saubers.

The gaps between the teams is relatively small and between the team-mates it is amazingly small with 5 team-mates having a gap of less than 0.1 second. Starting with the biggest gap though, it was between Alesi and Mazzacane with 1.083 seconds difference, next was Alonso and Marques with a gap of 0.6 seconds and then it is Michael Schumacher and Barrichello with a gap of 0.411 seconds.
The smallest gap was between Trulli and Frentzen with a gap of 0.003 seconds. Next was the gap between Verstappen and Bernoldi with 0.047 seconds separating them.  Then the gap between Fisichella and Button with a gap of 0.054. Next it was Mika Hakkinen ahead of David Coulthard by just 0.056 and Ralf Schumacher was only 0.076 seconds ahead of Juan Pablo Montoya.

The closeness of the field should make for an interesting race.
