Second Friday Practice Session Report - Results

The surprises continue here in Malaysia. After Rubens Barrichello set the fastest time this morning over half a second faster than team-mate Michael Schumacher. Jarno Trulli goes fastest in the second session ahead of Michael Schumacher and Rubens Barrichello. Those three are very close, in fact only 0.085 seconds separates Trulli from Barrichello. David Coulthard is in 4th place just under half a second behind while the other surprise of the day is Eddie Irvine who is 5th fastest and the best of the Michelin runners. Mika Hakkinen is 6th over a second off the pace. Frentzen, Burti, Panis and Ralf Schumacher make the top 10.

It was a disaster of a day for Williams newcomer Juan Pablo Montoya. He didn't manage a timed lap on either of the sessions. This is particularly bad for him as he does not have any experience on this track.

There were no major incidents during the session. Several drivers crossed the gravel trap as they push the cars to their limit. Mika Hakkinen spun towards the end of the session but managed to recover.

While today's times are not a real indication, it worthwhile pointing that the top 8 drivers have set a time faster than the best time set on Friday last year. This compared with the top 15 drivers setting faster times in Melbourne than the fastest time on Friday last year. Moreover, the difference between the fastest time here this year and last year is just over 1.4 seconds whereas in Melbourne is was just over 3.1 seconds.

Olivier Panis covered the most number of laps with 23 followed by a number of drivers who covered 21 laps including Jarno Trulli, Michael Schumacher and Nick Heidfeld. Juan Montoya didn't manage a single timed lap and all he did was 4 outlaps!. Tarso Marques only managed 7 laps as he suffered a blown engine. Fisichella and Verstappen only managed 13 laps each. Most other drivers covered between 15 and 20 laps.

We are starting to see a mix at the top with Jordan clearly getting stronger with the new Honda engine and Jaguar with Michelin tyres. It will be interesting to see how McLaren, Williams and BAR will react.
