First Friday Practice Session Report - Results

Rubens Barrichello sets a stunning lap time for the first Friday practice session. His time was over half a second faster than Michael Schumacher's time in 2nd place. 3rd was Trulli just a tenth slower than Michael while David Coulthard was 4th almost a second off the pace. A surprise Eddie Irvine was 5th but 1.5 seconds off the pace with Heinz Harald Frentzen in 6th. Mika Hakkinen, Olivier Panis, Luciano Burti and Nick Heidfeld make the top 10.

Fernando Alonso and Juan Pablo Montoya failed to set a timed lap. Both suffering problems with their cars and both new to the track. Jenson Button also suffered problems and only managed to set a time 9 seconds off the pace. His team-mate Giancarlo Fisichella was 15th.
Both Arrows AsiaTech car failed on the track with Verstappen suffering an electrical problem while Bernoldi with a gearbox problem. Eddie Irvine also stopped on the track just after setting his fastest time of the day.

Jean Alesi and Tarso Marques covered the most number of laps with 20. Burti was next with 19 laps. Alonso and Montoya only covered the installation lap. Bernoldi and Verstappen covered 6, Button and Fisichella covered 8. Most drivers covered between 11 and 15 laps.

The lap times during the session remained within last year's times until 10 minutes from the end when Michael Schumacher went slightly faster and then Rubens Barrichello went more than 0.7 seconds faster than last year. The top 3 times are faster than last year indicating that unlike Melbourne, the lap times are not going be much faster than last year.
