Saturday Practice Session Report - Results

After 2 hours of delay due to heavy fog on the track, only a single 45 minutes practice session was run. The Williams pair of Juan Pablo Montoya and Ralf Schumacher topped the timesheets ahead of the McLaren pair of Mika Hakkinen and David Coulthard. Rubens Barrichello was 5th ahead of Fisichella in 6th.

The session started under wet but drying conditions and most of the cars covered their shakedown lap with full wets. BAR elected to go on intermediates and stay on the track. Villeneuve and Panis exchanged fastest laps until the others came back out and it was Mika Hakkinen who was the fastest of the top runners early in the session as the track was drying. Michael Schumacher was 3rd.

With the track drying, Ralf Schumacher put on dry tyres and jumped to the top of the timesheets, soon after Montoya bettered that. Both Ferrari cars were in the garage undergoing a lot of work. When Rubens Barrichello finally emerged with less then 10 minutes to go he topped the times. Michael Schumacher never managed to get back on the track on dry tyres and his best time was set with wet tyres. In the dying minutes of the session Juan Pablo Montoya, Ralf Schumacher, Mika Hakkinen and David Coulthard go better than Barrichello!.

There were no on track incidents however in addition to Michael failing to get back onto the track, the 2 Sauber's and Jos Verstappen had no running with dry tyres.

Luciano Burti covered the most number of laps with 16 followed by Bernoldi, Panis and Ralf Schumacher with 15 laps each. Nick Heidfeld covered the least number of laps with 3 while Raikkonen only managed 5 and both Michael Schumacher and Jos Verstappen only covered 7 laps.

With the limited track time available for optimising the car setup, qualifying will be very interesting to see who can get on top of things quickly.

The weather was mainly cloudy with an average air temperature of 13 degree.

Qualifying starts at 1:00 PM local time. Go to the Live Update page for live coverage during Qualifying.
