Second Friday Practice Session Report - Results

McLaren appear to have responded to Ferrari challenge with both Mika Hakkinen and David Coulthard setting the pace during the session. Their lap times were over 0.7 seconds faster than those set by Ferrari with Rubens Barrichello in 3rd and Michael Schumacher in 4th. However Michael Schumacher did not improve on his time that he set this morning so one must assume that he's got some in reserve. It looks like it will be close tomorrow!.
Behind the top 2 team, Frentzen in the Jordan Honda was 5th ahead of Nick Heidfeld in the Sauber while Pedro de la Rosa finished 7th after missing out on the first session. His time was probably done on light fuel loads. Ralf Schumacher only managed 8th which is not a good sign for Williams while Jarno Trulli finished in 9th ahead of the second Sauber of Kimi Raikkonen.

Disappointments so far from Juan Pablo Montoya back in 17th while Giancarlo Fisichella is in 21st just ahead of Tarso Marques.

No major incidents happened during the session although towards the end of the session it started to rain and Fernando Alonso spun off and retired. Jacques Villeneuve spent around half of the session in the pits as his mechanics worked on a problem with his car.

Only the 2 McLaren's have clocked in the 1:22's, the 2 Ferrari's and Frentzen clocked in the 1:23's while 6th to 14th clocked times in the 1:24's.
1 second separates the top 4 and 2 seconds separate the top 14. Only the 2 Minardi's and Fisichella were over 3 seconds off the pace.

Jarno Trulli covered the most number of laps this session with 27 followed by Michael Schumacher and David Coulthard with 24 laps each. Fernando Alonso only managed 14 laps while his team-mate Tarso Marques only did 17. All other drivers covered between 18 and 23 laps.

Overall Jarno Trulli covered the most number of laps today with 46 ahead of Michael Schumacher with 45 and Eddie Irvine with 43. Pedro de la Rosa covered the least number of laps with 22 after missing the first session while Giancarlo Fisichella struggled today and only managed 25 laps.

Heading into qualifying day at Silverstone, it appears that McLaren could have a slight edge over Ferrari but one cannot discount Michael Schumacher. The Williams and in particular Ralf Schumacher will certainly improve. Jordan will probably slightly behind the Ferraris and McLarens but could mix it with Williams depending on the Michelin tyres.

Rain is forecast at this stage later during qualifying so we could see an interesting and unpredictable session!
