Second Friday Practice Session Report - Results

Rubens Barrichello set the fastest time of the session under mainly wet conditions half a second ahead of his team-mate Michael Schumacher. Giancarlo Fisichella was 3rd almost 2 seconds off the pace ahead of Juan Pablo Montoya, Takuma Sato and Jacques Villeneuve.
Kimi Raikkonen, Felipe Massa, Jenson Button and Nick Heidfeld make the top 10.
The 2 Arrows drivers didn't make it onto the track this session either indicting that the engine supply issue with Cosworth has yet to be resolved while Mika Salo was told to relax today as he recovers from a sickness reported to be food poisoning.

The session started under very wet conditions and was still raining however the rain eased early in the session and the track started to dry. Michael Schumacher moved into 16th on his first timed lap then improved to 11th. A number of other drivers improved on their times from the morning particularly the Williams pair and it looked for a while that the Michelin runners were matching the Bridgestones under wet conditions.

Once the track started to dry out and the drivers were able to switch to intermediates, the Bridgestone runners appeared to have a definite advantage and by the end of the session 5 out of the top 6 were Bridgestone runners.

Several drivers spun during the session including Coulthard, Fisichella, Webber and Ralf Schumacher. Alex Yoong had a problem on the track and was forced to stop.

Pedro de la Rosa and Kimi Raikkonen covered the most number of laps with 26 each while Eddie Irvine covered the least number of laps with 11. Mika Salo, Heinz Harald Frentzen and Enrique Bernoldi didn't take part in the session.
de la Rosa and Raikkonen also covered the most number of laps for the day with 39 ahead of Alex Yoong with 38. Juan Pablo Montoya covered the least number of laps with 21.

The gap between Barrichello and Michael is over 0.4 seconds and given the wet track conditions it is surprising as Michael is known to do well under wet conditions. However Barrichello is also known to be a good wet weather driver.

Again not much can be read into the times of the session however it is clear that the Bridgestone intermediates are superior to the Michelins and that the Ferraris under these conditions appear untouchable.
