First Saturday Practice Session Report - Results

Michael Schumacher set the fastest time of the session (1:20.750) ahead of his team-mate Rubens Barrichello. Kimi Raikkonen in the McLaren was a distant 3rd over 1.6 seconds behind while Heinz Harald Frentzen was 4th ahead of Jacques Villeneuve and David Coulthard.
Takuma Sato, Enrique Bernoldi, Jarno Trulli and Jenson Button make the top 10.

The pace of the Ferraris is stunning as Michael Schumacher closes in on the pole time of last year (1:20.477) and even though the 2 McLaren's are in the top 6, they are over 1.5 seconds off the pace and tyres contribute a great deal to this gap. Williams are struggling even more at these low temperatures with Ralf Schumacher in 14th and Montoya in 15th both over 3.5 seconds off the pace.

At the back Alex Yoong appears to be struggling setting a time that is over 1.5 seconds outside the 107% time. The Toyotas are also struggling on this track only managing to set times faster than Yoong's.

A number of drivers had problems during this session with Fisichella stopping on the track on his out lap, Panis stopping on the track and Eddie Irvine didn't come out of his garage after his installation lap.

Felipe Massa and Nick Heidfeld covered the most number of laps with 20 each while Panis only managed 8 laps. Fisichella and Irvine had only a lap each.

With the temperatures expected to rise, the gap to Ferrari should narrow.
